Supporting the Magistrate Courts

The Magistrate Court of Fulton County has long been a pillar of justice, fairness, and community engagement. With a commitment to resolving disputes, upholding the law, and ensuring accountability, the court has served as a trusted resource for residents. However, as demand grows, so do the challenges. The court is now reaching out to the community for support to overcome resource shortages and continue providing the high-quality service that residents deserve.

Achievements Worth Celebrating

Since 2015, the Magistrate Court has closed over 646,421 cases, with 52,807 cases resolved in 2024 alone. These numbers reflect the hard work and efficiency of a small but dedicated staff. Beyond case management, the court also offers valuable community-focused programs, including:

  • Chatbot Services: Guiding residents on small claims, garnishments, and warrant applications.
  • R.E.A.C.H. Clinic: Offering resources and education to help residents navigate the legal system.
  • Misdemeanor Mental Health Court (MMC): Supporting rehabilitation with an impressive 72% graduation rate, helping participants achieve stability and reduce reoffending.

These initiatives ensure that the court resolves disputes and builds a stronger, more informed community.

The Challenge

Despite its successes, the Magistrate Court is facing significant staffing and resource shortages. These constraints are leading to backlogs in civil cases, such as landlord-tenant disputes and small claims, delaying timely hearings and increasing the strain on the court system. Without immediate intervention, the court’s ability to maintain its high standard of service may be compromised.

How You Can Help

Chief Magistrate Judge Kirk calls on Fulton County residents and leaders to support the court’s efforts to secure a much-needed budget increase. This funding would allow the court to hire additional staff, reduce backlogs, and enhance service delivery.
