WHAT: Fulton County Candidate Qualifying
WHEN: Wednesday May 23rd, 9:00-5:00; Thursday May 24th, 9:00-5:00, Friday May 25th, 9:00-12:00 (NOTE: Qualifying ends promptly at Noon on Friday!)
WHERE: Democratic Party of Georgia Headquarters
763 Trabert Avenue NW, Atlanta 30318. MAP

NOTE: this is the same time and place that qualifying will occur for FCDP Post Seat Holders and all other county-level candidates such as Sheriff, Clerk of Court, etc.

RUNNING FOR A FCDP POST SEAT

Your local Fulton County Democratic Party is not only a “Big-D” Democratic organization, we’re a “Little-d” democratic organization too. We are organized so that anyone can become a member of the Party, but the VOTING MEMBERS (also called “Post Seat Holders,” kind of like a Precinct Captains) are actually ELECTED ON THE BALLOT by all the Democratic Primary voters. That’s right, the Democratic Voters actually elect our Fulton County Democratic Party voting members.

Intrigued? Think you have what it takes to help lead the party? Then you should run! It’s easy!

There are six “Post Seats” for every Georgia House District with any portion in Fulton County. Usually, we only elect 3 out of 6 every four years, but because of the Census and Reapportionment, every district seat is up for election this year. You can run for any seat in your House District as long as you are a registered voter in Fulton County and take pride in being a Democrat.

HERE ARE THE STEPS TO QUALIFY FOR POST SEAT:

1) Verify your Georgia House District (double-check! Many of us have been redistricted this year.)

2) Download and complete this Declaration of Candidacy and Affidavit (NOTE: This form must be notarized! Find a local notary and have them notarize your signature on the form.)

3) Download and complete the Fulton County Post Seat Holder application.

4) Bring both forms, along with a $35.00 Qualifying Fee (cash or check ok), to the DPG headquarters during the dates and times above.

5) We will check over your paperwork, verify your Voter Registration, and that’s it!

And voila, your name will appear on the actual Democratic Primary ballot.

(Watch your email for a notice of a special conference call to review the process and answer questions. The call is coming up on Monday evening at 7:00. Call details will be sent out later this week. If you are not currently on our mailing list, sign up here.)

Caucus Overview

On Saturday, April 21, 2012, Democrats from across the state will gather to elect delegates to represent Georgia at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. We are thrilled with the enthusiasm of all the candidates, but particularly pleased with our Fulton County Democrats running in the 5th, 6th, and 13th Congressional Districts.

We hope that everyone will make a point of participating in the caucuses – either as candidates, voters, or volunteers. Every four years we come together for this important task, and we could not do it without the help of generous and talented volunteers. If you attend the caucus on Saturday, please take a moment to thank the person at the registration desk, the folks managing the crowds, or the vote counters.

Below is a list of all the candidates for the 5th, 6th, and 13th Congressional Caucuses. Please take the time out of your busy Saturday to go to the caucus in your district, listen to the speeches, and cast votes for the people that you believe best represent your district and Georgia.

Democratically yours,

All the 411 on Fulton County’s new Republican-drawn maps…and the Dem strategy to WIN ANYWAY!

Join us this Thursday with special guest Democratic Senator Horacena Tate, the Senate Fulton Delegation Chair, to get the latest developments on the ongoing drawing of the electoral maps in Fulton County. The latest wrinkle is the Republican power grab to put control of Fulton County into the hands of the Republicans, despite the clear Democratic majority county-wide. To stay competitive, the Democratic family is going to have to stay united and work HARD and SMART. Come hear the briefing from Senator Tate for all the latest news and what Dems are planning to do to fight back.

WALK THE WALK: United Way Shoebox Project 2012
Bring personal care packages for homeless women and children who need our caring support. Fill (and decorate if you can!) one or more shoeboxes with new, unopened personal care items. The three regions (South Fulton, Mid Fulton, and North Fulton) will be competing to see which region can being the MOST shoeboxes. Click here for more information on what to put in your boxes.

It’s 10:00 am, do you know where your legislator is?! Join us for our annual Lobby Day this coming Wednesday, February 29th at 9:00 am. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. We will provide training and guidance as you move from interested observer to full-fledged participant in the democratic process!

Some thoughts from previous participants:
“It’s amazing how empowered you feel”
“I couldn’t get over how easy it really is to plug in”
“Wow, it’s a little disappointing how few Georgians are here at the Capitol taking a stand…but glad I did!”
“I haven’t been to the Capitol since I was in third grade – I should have come back sooner”
“I am hooked – this was fantastic”

This once-a-year event may be the single most valuable political activity you undertake this year. Take a morning off, arrange child care, bring a friend or neighbor; do what you have to do but don’t miss it!

WHAT: Fulton County Dems Lobby Day
WHEN: February 29th, 9:00-12:00 (optional lunch 12:00-1:00)
WHERE: 2nd Floor of Capitol Building, Room 230
PLEASE WEAR: Business attire recommended. Our representatives and senators dress up to work for us, and generally they will take us more seriously if we look like we take ourselves seriously.

If you haven’t been to the Capitol complex, don’t let that stop you. Park at any paid surface lots in the vicinity or take MARTA to the Georgia State station.

If you have ever been confused about the laws concerning voter registration, you are not alone. Many people believe that spreading confusion about the registration process is actually a deliberate tactic used by Republicans to suppress the vote. Since a key mission of the Fulton County Democratic Party is to register voters and fight misinformation, it is critically important that we understand the ACTUAL laws and can carry out our voter registration activities with confidence.

Don’t miss one of these two opportunities to become an official Deputy Registrar in Fulton County. Completion of this training will enable you to carry out official Voter Registration events as well as cover the rules about other types of Voter Registration activities.

WHAT: Fulton County Deputy Registrar Training
WHEN: Sunday, December 4th 1:00 – 2:00
OR Thursday, December 8th 6:00 – 7:00 (then stay for the December meeting and Holiday Party!)

We are looking forward to seeing everyone for our November meeting. This coming Thursday, November 10th 7:00 pm

763 Trabert Ave, NW (DPG Headquarters)
Suite A
Atlanta, GA 30318
(Off Howell Mill Road)

Several important and exciting things to note:

Our special guest speaker will be Isaac Newton Farris, Jr, President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Mr. Farris, nephew of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. took over the leadership of the iconic Civil Rights organization this summer, and has already been a leading voice in Atlanta and nationally on issues such as the Troy Davis execution and the Occupy Atlanta movements. Please come to hear this national leader talk about the state of the Civil Rights movement today, the role of the Democratic Party in the ongoing fight for equality, and what each of us can do to further the goals of Civil Rights in our city, state, and nation.

This month’s Walk the Walk* is a food drive for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Please bring donations of non-perishable food items and/or non-food items like diapers. Let’s show Fulton County how much the Democratic Party cares for our neighbors this Thanksgiving by helping the Food Bank stock their shelves. To make it a little more exciting, those of us in Mid Fulton are challenging North and South Fulton to see which region can bring in the most donations! We’ll feature the winning region on the website all next month.

We will be electing two new State Committee Members. These seats have been vacated by Melanie Goux, who has been appointed as Webmaster for the Democratic Party of Georgia and by Catherine Smith, who was elected as the new 5th Congressional District Chair. In order to maintain our original gender and geographic diversity, we will need to elect two women to replace these two women, and they will both need to be from the 5th Fulton County Commission District (Commissioner Emma Darnell) http://www.fultoncountyga.gov/commissioners

Eligible to Vote: All current Fulton County Post Seat Holders

Eligible to Run: Any female Democrat currently registered to vote in the Fulton County’s Fifth Commission District

* Walk the Walk is the Fulton County Democratic Party’s monthly community service project.
